A large vessel stroke is affecting otherwise healthy young people with COVID-19, according to a study conducted by New York University’s Langone Medical Center.
Healthy young people with no preexisting health conditions and no risk factors for stroke may now be at increased risk if they contracted COVID-19. Even if their case of coronavirus was asymptomatic and therefore, undiagnosed and untreated. According to Pascal Jabbour, MD, who has presented observations based on a 14-patient study, young people, who may not have even realized they had COVID-19, are developing clots. This severity of blood clotting is known to cause a large vessel stroke.
According to Jabbour, MD, the likelihood of suffering a massive stroke has recently increased in young populations. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has seen more patients in their 30s – 50s suffering massive strokes. The extent of which are typically experienced by patients in their 70s – 90s.
This finding speaks volumes to the long term effects of COVID-19, which researchers are continuing to uncover as the pandemic continues on.
